ABOUT YOU

Have you ever had to help someone who was hurt? What did you do? When did you last have a day off school because you were ill?

Yes, last year my younger brother fell off his bicycle and cut his knee badly. I helped him get home, cleaned the wound with cool water, and put a clean bandage on it. The last time I had a day off school was two months ago when I had a high fever and a sore throat because of the flu.

VOCABULARY

1 Look at the photos. What’s wrong with the people?

In the top photo, the girl has injured her leg or back while exercising, and her muscles ache. In the bottom photo, the girl has a cold and flu symptoms; she is sneezing and blowing her nose with a tissue.

2 Read the quiz. Check the meaning of the words.

  • burn: to hurt or damage your body with something very hot or fire
  • cut: to make an opening or wound in your skin with a sharp object like a knife
  • bleed: to lose blood from the body, usually through a cut or injury
  • blow your nose: to clear your nose of liquid by blowing air through it into a tissue
  • blink: to quickly close and open your eyes
  • cough: to force air out of your throat with a sudden, harsh noise when you are ill
  • injure: to hurt a part of your body in an accident or while doing sports
  • recover: to become well and healthy again after an illness or injury
  • ache: to feel a continuous, dull pain in a part of your body
  • yawn: to open your mouth wide and take in a deep breath because you are tired or bored
  • breathe: to take air into your lungs and push it out through your nose or mouth
  • beat: (of a heart) to make regular rhythmic movements and pump blood through the body

3 Do the quiz with your partner.

1 C (put your hand under cool water) 2 B (put pressure on the area and then clean it with cold water) 3 B (hold the top of your nose firmly between your thumb and a finger) 4 A (blink regularly) 5 B (offer them a sweet or a drink) 6 C (stop playing and rest for a few days until you recover) 7 B (relax in a hot bath) 8 B (breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth)

4 Listen to a podcast and see how many answers in the quiz you got right.

According to Marvin on the podcast, the correct answers are:

  1. C (put your hand under cool running water)
  2. B (press a clean cloth on the cut to stop bleeding and clean it with cold water)
  3. B (hold the top of your nose firmly between your thumb and finger)
  4. A (blink regularly to keep your eyes from drying out)
  5. B (offer a cough sweet or a drink)
  6. C (stop playing immediately and rest for a few days until you recover)
  7. B (relax in a warm bath to relax your muscles)
  8. B (breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth)

All eight answers are correct.

5 Complete the sentences with the correct form of words from the quiz.

1 After an hour of running, my leg muscles really ached. 2 Be careful with that sharp knife or you might cut yourself. 3 When I had something in my eye, my dad told me to blink a few times. 4 My friend burnt her hand while she was ironing her clothes. 5 When I was playing basketball, I fell over and injured my foot. 6 Sometimes you yawn when you’re tired or bored. 7 When we run or do exercise, we breathe more quickly. 8 Last year I had the flu and it took me ages to recover. I was off school for two weeks! 9 I was really excited and I could feel my heart beating. 10 The ball hit me hard in the face and my nose began to bleed. 11 My mum had a really bad cold last month. She was sneezing and coughing all day.

READING

1 How many hours sleep do you get most nights? How many hours do you think you should get?

I usually get about seven hours of sleep on school nights because I stay up doing homework and chatting with friends. However, I think teenagers should get at least eight to nine hours of sleep every night to feel fresh and concentrate well at school.

2 Read the title of the article. Which of the topics do you think it will discuss? Read the article quickly to check your ideas.

The article discusses the following topics:

  • How to get to sleep
  • How much sleep you need
  • Looking at your mobile phone
  • Reading a book at bedtime

(The topic The true meaning of dreams is not discussed in the text.)

3 Match the titles to paragraphs A–D. There is one extra title that you don’t need.

Paragraph A – 5 The science of sleep and technology use Paragraph B – 2 The dangers of not getting a good night’s sleep Paragraph C – 4 How to reduce your screen time Paragraph D – 1 What are technology companies doing about this?

Extra title: 3 What you should eat before you go to bed

4 Match the highlighted words in the article to the meanings.

1 an important part or characteristic of something – feature 2 the way you feel – mood 3 think about the thing you are doing and nothing else – concentrate 4 pieces of electronic equipment, like phones or tablets – devices 5 trying to understand the reason for something – wondering

TALKING POINTS

What was the last thing you did before you went to sleep last night? Do you have a routine before going to sleep? Do you think you should change your bedtime routine? In what ways?

The last thing I did before I went to sleep last night was set my alarm clock and put my phone away. I have a regular bedtime routine: I brush my teeth, open the window to get some fresh air in the room, and read a paper book in bed for about fifteen minutes. I think I should change my routine by turning off all electronic devices at least an hour before going to bed because screen time makes it harder to fall asleep.

To: auntiemay@teentroubles.com Dear Auntie May,

I want to tell you about someone in my class. He used to be really fun and easygoing, but I think that there is something wrong with him. Everyone in my class thinks the same. We had to do a project together and he was annoyed all the time. He didn’t seem to have anything to say and nothing we could say made him feel any better. We don’t know what to do. What should we do? Please help us!

SPEAKING

1 Read the instructions for the task below. Think about each idea and make notes. Compare your notes with a partner.

  • Watching a movie together: It is very calm, comfortable, and she can lie down on the sofa and rest without getting tired.
  • Playing video games: It is entertaining and fun, but looking at the screen for too long might give her a headache.
  • Cooking a special meal: A delicious home-cooked dinner shows care, but she might not have a great appetite on her first day back.
  • Giving gifts and balloons: It creates a pleasant atmosphere and makes her feel welcome, but it is over quickly.
  • Inviting friends over for a party: It is exciting, but it might be too loud and exhausting for someone recovering from an illness or injury.

2 Discuss your ideas with your partner. Talk about all the ideas and agree on which is best. Use phrases from the Prepare to speak box.

A: In my view, throwing a big party with friends is not a good idea because she will probably be quite weak and tired after being in the hospital. What do you think? B: I agree with you. In my opinion, she needs something quiet and restful. How about playing video games or cooking a nice dinner? A: I don’t think playing video games is great because screens can cause eye strain and tiredness. In my view, cooking a light meal is nice, but watching a film together might be even better. Do you agree? B: Yes, I think watching a movie together on the sofa is definitely the best idea because she can simply relax, enjoy time with family, and rest.
