ABOUT YOU

Where do you usually go shopping? Which is your favourite shop? Which is better: going to shops or shopping online?

I usually go shopping at the local shopping centre near my house or browse different websites online. My favourite shop is a sports store called Decathlon because they have a great selection of clothes, shoes, and sports gear at reasonable prices. In my opinion, shopping online is better for finding bargains and comparing prices quickly, but going to actual shops is better when you need to try clothes on to make sure they fit properly.

VOCABULARY

1 Look at the photos. What different things can you buy in these places? Compare your answers with your partner.

In photo A (an outdoor street market), you can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, souvenirs, handmade crafts, and cheap clothes. In photo B (a department store), you can purchase cosmetics, designer clothes, perfume, household items, and electronics. In photo C (small street shops and boutiques), you can find unique clothing items, gifts, books, and bakery products. In photo D (online shopping on a laptop), you can order almost anything, including gadgets, video games, books, trainers, and accessories. In photo E (a large shopping mall), you can shop for branded clothes, footwear, sporting equipment, toys, and food in the food court.

2 Listen to five teenagers talking about these different places to shop. Match each speaker to one of the photos.

3 Complete the sentences with the words from the box. Then listen again and check.

1 Daisy says that markets are probably her favourite place to shop. She says you don’t have to spend much money there. But if you’re a tourist, sometimes they can charge you high prices.

2 Sean thinks that online shopping is the best thing ever. He says if you spend a certain amount, you don’t have to pay the delivery charges. If the item isn’t right, you can usually send it back.

3 Alec’s favourite department store was offering a 10% discount on some games. He also says they are really good about refunds.

4 Rose uses store cards when she purchases items. Her favourite shop often has promotions. Some of her schoolmates work in shops and they serve her, which she thinks is nice. She often gets good service.

5 Iris likes little shops. She says if you buy something and it’s not right, it’s easy to exchange it. You just have to show them the receipt.

4 Discuss the questions.

1 Where do you generally shop?

I generally shop in clothing stores in the city centre and on popular online shopping websites.

2 Do you keep receipts? Why are they important?

Yes, I always keep my receipts in my wallet. They are important because you need to show proof of purchase if you want to return an item, get a refund, or exchange something that is faulty.

3 Is good service important? Why?

Yes, good customer service is very important. When shop assistants are polite and helpful, it makes the shopping experience pleasant and makes customers want to return to that store again.

4 When was the last time you got a discount? How much was it?

The last time I got a discount was two weeks ago when I bought a hoodie during an end-of-season sale. I got a 20% discount on the original price.

5 How do you get discounts?

You can get discounts by shopping during seasonal sales, using student cards, signing up for store loyalty programmes, or using promo codes when buying things online.

6 Have you ever sent an item back, or returned it to the shop yourself? Say what happened.

Yes, I once ordered a pair of trainers online, but when they arrived, they were the wrong size and too small. I printed the return label, sent the package back by post, and received a full refund to my bank card within a week.

READING

1 Read the title and first line of the article. What do you think Olivia and her friends do in town? Read the article quickly to check.

They go to a coffee shop, look at fashions online and in shops, visit a gaming store to try out new games, and go for lunch.

2 Read the article again. Five sentences have been removed from the text. For each space choose the correct sentence. There are three extra sentences which you do not need to use.

TALKING POINTS

Do you think people spend too much time looking at things they’d like to buy online? Do you think it is important to buy good-quality products which are more expensive, rather than buying cheaper items? Why? / Why not?

Yes, many teenagers spend hours browsing online shops and adding items to wishlists instead of studying or meeting friends in person. It is definitely better to buy good-quality products even if they cost more, because they last much longer and do not need to be replaced quickly.

WRITING

1 Read the introduction to the magazine competition. What do you have to write about?

You have to write about the last cool thing you bought, mentioning where you bought it and whether your friends like it.

2 Read the three texts. Which thing do you think is the coolest?

The coolest item is JD’s Bluetooth headphones because they are modern, stylish, and very useful for listening to music every day.

3 Read the Prepare to write box. Read the texts and underline the following in each one: Maksym’s message: shopping vocabulary / Emily’s message: all the determiners from page 12 / JD’s message: two different tenses

• Maksym’s message (shopping vocabulary): Last week, I bought some really cool sunglasses from a shop in my town called Eyewear. It’s a great shop that only sells sunglasses. There are a lot of styles to choose from but I chose these ones because I just loved them! There was a promotion that day and I got a 10% discount. I forgot the receipt, so I went back to get it and the assistant gave me a free case to keep them in. Great customer service!

• Emily’s message (determiners from page 12): Mum was going to get these cute trainers for me at the end of the month, but I couldn’t wait any longer, so I bought them myself. I got them from the local sports shop near my house. Several of my friends already had pink ones, but I wanted to be different. So I got some orange and blue ones! Plenty of people have asked me where I got them, but I’m not telling anyone my secret store!

• JD’s message (two different tenses):

5 Read about the competition again. You are going to write a short text about something you bought recently. Plan your ideas and make some notes. Here are some ideas to help you.

At Urban Style, a popular streetwear store in the city centre. • Why did you choose it? It is warm, comfortable, and matches most of my clothes. • What do your friends think? They really like the cool design and want to get matching ones. • Extra information: The shop assistant offered a 15% student discount at the checkout, and I got free stickers.

6 Write your own short text. Use the tips in the Prepare to write box. Write about 80 words. Remember to check your spelling and grammar.

Last weekend, I bought a super cool oversized hoodie from Urban Style, a streetwear shop in the city centre. I chose it because I loved the graphic print on the back, and the material is extremely soft and warm. There were plenty of styles, but I decided to get a black one. I even received a 15% discount at the checkout because of a student promotion! My friends think it looks awesome, and two of them want to buy one too.

Watch the video and then answer the questions. How important are friends to you? What makes a good friend, in your opinion?

Friends are extremely important to me because they support me when I feel down and make everyday life much more exciting. In my opinion, a good friend must be loyal, honest, and reliable, so you can always trust them with your secrets. A true friend is also a thoughtful listener who accepts you for who you are and is always ready to help in difficult situations.

Myself: I would describe myself as loyal, reliable, and sociable because I always support my friends, keep their secrets, and enjoy spending time with people. However, I can also be a bit anxious in large crowds of people I do not know well.
