2. Complete the story. Use the past simple or past continuous form of the verbs.

On a cold January morning, Flight 1549 was taking off from a New York airport when it ¹hit some birds. The engines ²stopped almost immediately. Captain Sullenberger quickly realised that the plane ³was falling very fast. There was only one place he could land the plane: on the Hudson River in the middle of New York!

Steven Day is a photographer. That morning he ⁴was working on his computer when someone passed his desk. ‘What’s that?’ they asked, pointing to something on the river. Steven ⁵found his camera. At first, he didn’t know what he ⁶was taking pictures of. ‘It ⁷was moving down the river, like a boat,’ he said. When he looked closely, he ⁸saw it was a plane. People ⁹were standing on its wings in the middle of the river!

The next day Stephen’s photograph ¹⁰appeared in newspapers and on websites all over the world.
