In Scotland, a local dish is ‘Cullen skink’, a creamy fish soup. In Wales, there’s ‘Welsh rarebit’, which is hot cheese on toast, and ‘bara brith’, sweet bread with fruit.

3) Do you think British food is very different from food in Ukraine?

Yes, I think British food is very different from Ukrainian food. For example, a ‘full English breakfast’ with beans is not a typical breakfast in Ukraine. Dishes like ‘fish and chips’ are also not traditional for Ukraine, where we might eat varenyky or borscht.

Welcome to my city, Kyiv! We have a lot of delicious food for you to try. Here is a guide to help you choose.

What food is popular in Ukraine?

When you visit Ukraine, you must try our national dishes. A very famous dish is borsch. It’s a soup made with beetroot (буряк), and it’s usually served with sour cream (сметана). Another popular food is varenyky. They are like dumplings and can have many different fillings (начинки), like potatoes, cheese, or even cherries. You should also try holubtsi, which are cabbage rolls stuffed with rice and meat.

What are the local specialities where you live?

Here in Kyiv, our most famous local speciality is Chicken Kyiv. It is a chicken fillet filled with cold butter, then fried. When you cut it, the butter melts out. It’s very tasty! It was named after our city.

Which restaurants should tourists try in your area?

You should try restaurants that serve traditional Ukrainian food. There are many places called “Puzata Hata” (Пузата Хата). It’s a chain of restaurants where you can see all the food and choose what you like. It’s not expensive and very popular with locals.

What fast food is popular where you live?

A very popular fast food in Kyiv is Kyivska Perepichka (Київська перепічка). It’s a sausage in fried dough. There is only one place that sells it, and there is always a long queue (черга), but it’s worth it!

What desserts or sweets should visitors have?

For dessert, you have to try the Kyiv Cake (Київський торт). It is a famous cake with nuts and a special cream. Another sweet dish is syrnyky (сирники). They are small fried pancakes made from cottage cheese and are often served with jam or sour cream.

What other food might people want to try?

If you are feeling adventurous, you could try salo (сало). It is cured pork fat, and we often eat it with black bread and garlic. Some tourists might not like it, but it’s very traditional food. You could also try deruny (деруни), which are potato pancakes, often served with sour cream.
