TALKING POINTS
Why have we discovered only 20% of the world’s animals and plants?
The article says that 80% of life could still be unknown. Maybe because many places, like the deep ocean, are very hard to explore.

1 Rats 2 Dogs 3 Bees 4 Rats 5 Dogs 6 Bees
4. Discuss the questions
- In what ways do you think Riley has improved Donna’s life?
I haven’t read the text about Riley and Donna, but I can guess that Riley is an assistance animal (тварина-помічник), maybe a dog. Riley probably helps Donna with everyday tasks, which makes her more independent (незалежна). Also, Riley is likely a good friend to Donna, so she doesn’t feel lonely and feels more confident (впевненіше) when she goes outside.
- In what other ways can animals improve people’s lives?
Animals can improve our lives in many ways.
- Pets, like cats and dogs, give us company and reduce stress. They can make people feel happy.
- Guide dogs (собаки-поводирі) help people who are blind to move around safely.
- Therapy animals (терапевтичні тварини) visit hospitals or nursing homes to provide comfort and emotional support (емоційна підтримка).
- On farms, animals like horses or oxen help with heavy work.
- Is it fair to use animals to help us in dangerous situations? Why? / Why not?
This is a difficult question. On one hand, it doesn’t seem fair because the animals don’t choose to be in danger. They can get hurt or even killed, and we should protect them. On the other hand, search-and-rescue dogs (пошуково-рятувальні собаки) can find people after an earthquake and save human lives. They are often very well trained and have a strong bond (зв’язок) with their handlers. I think it can be fair only if the animals are treated with great care and respect, and we do everything to keep them safe.

1. Look at the photo. What do you think is happening?

- In the middle, there is a big pile of snow.
- On the right, I can see a rescue dog, it looks like a German Shepherd, and another person standing next to it.
- It’s probably a search and rescue mission. They might be looking for a person who got stuck under the snow. Perhaps the dog found something, and now the person is digging to get the trapped person out.
