TALKING POINTS

What food or drink from your country would you like Ollie to try?

I would like Ollie to try borscht (борщ) – it’s a traditional Ukrainian soup made with beetroot that gives it a beautiful red color. It might seem strange to foreigners because of its bright color, but it’s delicious and very healthy. I think he would also find salo (сало) interesting – it’s cured pork fat that we eat with bread and garlic. Many people from other countries think it’s disgusting (огидно), but it’s actually very tasty and gives you energy. Another interesting drink would be kompot (компот) – a sweet drink made from boiled fruits that we drink hot or cold.

Do you think more people will eat insects in the future? Why?/Why not?

Yes, I think more people will eat insects in the future for several reasons. First, insects are very nutritious (поживні) – they contain lots of protein and vitamins. Second, raising insects for food is much better for the environment (навколишнє середовище) than raising cows or pigs because insects need less water and space. Third, there are already many countries where people eat insects regularly, like in Asia and Africa. However, I think it will take time for people in Europe and America to accept this idea because we’re not used to it culturally (культурно). Maybe scientists will find ways to make insect food look more appealing (привабливо), like making protein bars or flour from insects instead of eating whole bugs.

LISTENING

1 Have you ever made a meal for anyone? What did you make?

Yes, I have made a meal for my family! Last month I cooked pasta with tomato sauce (томатний соус) for my younger sister when my parents were working late. It was quite simple (досить простий) but delicious.

I boiled the pasta for about 10 minutes until it was soft, then I heated up some tomato sauce in a pan. I added some herbs (трави) like basil (базилік) and oregano (орегано) to make it taste better. I also grated (натер) some cheese on top.

My sister said it tasted really good and she asked for a second portion (порція)! I felt proud (пишався) because it was one of the first times I cooked a complete meal by myself. The kitchen smelled amazing (чудово) while I was cooking.

Now I often help my mom prepare dinner on weekends. Sometimes I make scrambled eggs (яєчня) for breakfast or sandwiches for lunch. Cooking is actually quite fun (веселе) and I’m learning new recipes (рецепти) from my grandmother too.
